00:00
hey kids nice to see you again
00:03
uh so it’s tool tuesday so today’s tool
00:07
tape measure there’s a lot of little
00:09
different things about a tape measure
00:11
that you may not be aware of so i
00:12
thought i’d run through those
00:13
uh and i have a dad joke for you before
00:15
we do that i wanted to tell you just a
00:18
a couple quick nice things about a tape
00:22
i sell office supplies for a living
00:24
that’s what i’ve done for almost 30
00:26
um many times i’ve had people um
00:29
order a white board like a three foot by
00:33
it arrives and then i get a call oh i
00:35
didn’t know it was going to be that big
00:38
well it’s a three by four white board
00:40
when you order a three by four
00:42
white board it’ll be three foot by four
00:44
foot right you can count on it that’s a
00:47
uh measurements right so and then also
00:50
i was thinking uh you know there’s been
00:52
many times too over the course of my
00:55
learned the hard way some things you
00:57
know like when you buy a couch
00:59
and you’re trying to fit it through your
01:00
doorway it’s best just to pull out your
01:04
measure that entryway before you get and
01:06
you’re carrying this heavy couch and
01:07
you’re fighting it and it’s like oh i
01:10
measure the couch measure the doorway
01:13
it’ll probably save you a little bit of
01:15
grief so before we get into that i have
01:19
uh what did the donkey do when he got
01:24
he honked ah so uh let’s get started
01:28
okay so before we get into all the
01:30
different parts of a tape measure let’s
01:32
make sure we understand what the
01:34
to um some of these finer markings
01:37
um so each of these bigger marks is an
01:41
right so one two three four five six
01:45
inch by inch and then these smaller
01:48
if you’re going halfway in between right
01:51
that’s an inch and a half right in the
01:53
middle there so and actually on this one
01:56
and so when you go to buy your tape
01:58
measure depending on what you’re using
02:00
you know this is a 25-footer this is a
02:02
12-footer and the 12-footer is handy for
02:05
you know measuring small things if
02:06
you’re getting into any kind of
02:07
construction you want at least a
02:11
but so if we look at this this actually
02:13
divides it all up for you so if you’re
02:16
four and a half right so you just go
02:20
four and then a half but then what’s
02:22
that’s a fourth and if you’re not good
02:25
at math it might be helpful to actually
02:28
spells it out for you see this one
02:31
um so it tells you what each one is you
02:33
know halfway through is a half
02:37
not trying to get basic but boy i’ve had
02:40
hey can you just measure that for me and
02:42
let me know what the size is
02:44
uh and then there they get intimidated
02:48
so yeah it might not be a bad idea for
02:50
you to go ahead and get something that
02:52
uh has the markings for you so okay
02:55
let’s get into the tape measure
02:59
okay so the first thing i want you to
03:03
see how it’s curved the reason for that
03:06
is so that when you extend it out
03:09
it’ll hold up right you can get this one
03:11
out this is a 25 footer and i can get it
03:14
almost i think 10 or 12 feet before it
03:19
snaps or gives in you know to the to the
03:22
weight of it if it was flat it wouldn’t
03:23
do that right so that’s a nice thing
03:26
here’s another thing the lock you can
03:28
push that lock down and hold it
03:31
right so that holds it wherever you want
03:34
let go of it i find it’s helpful to kind
03:38
have my my finger on the bottom as it
03:40
comes back in because if you don’t it’s
03:42
which isn’t that big a deal but anyway
03:44
just a little tip for you
03:46
so uh so let’s take a look at it too
03:50
so we have we have black numbers
03:53
right and every black number is is an
03:57
right so that makes it easy so when you
04:00
a foot it’s got a one foot right there
04:04
after that it starts it continues to
04:06
count up in individual inches right so 9
04:09
10 11 12 13 but also on the other side
04:12
one foot and then it’s got a red number
04:15
so one foot one inch one foot two inch
04:19
okay so those are that’s a nice way to
04:22
as you’re laying out a room or whatever
04:24
laying out flooring trying to figure all
04:27
it’s helpful to be able to call out
04:29
exactly what you’re looking for
04:34
let’s see so as you get to
04:38
get further on up you see this 16 inches
04:41
if you’ve watched my um my stud
04:44
video on how to find a stud my stud
04:48
um every 16 inches you’ll find a stud
04:52
in your walls or you should if it’s
04:54
built properly so every 16 inches
04:56
on center that means you know the center
04:59
of the stud is every 16 inches so as we
05:02
because we pull this out see there’s
05:06
that tells me that’s where that other
05:09
all right so here’s a new another cool
05:14
many people might not even be aware of
05:17
see that little slot there that’s
05:22
go over a nail so you can measure that
05:26
okay so it just clips onto a nail like
05:29
okay and then there’s actually these top
05:34
uh tape measures see those hooks that
05:36
are sitting out at the top there
05:38
right there so that way you can hook
05:41
that like that okay you hook it on the
05:46
and pull that way okay uh
05:49
some of these actually have a scribing
05:51
tool too um on the end here so that that
05:55
and roll it back and forth like that to
05:58
this particular one doesn’t here’s a
06:00
kind of a cheaper one that actually has
06:02
it has a serrated edge if you can see
06:04
right so that you can actually um you
06:09
as you’re making a mark if you don’t
06:13
okay here’s another thing that’s pretty
06:16
is this you know how this thing wobbles
06:18
back and forth a little bit the end
06:20
it moves back and forth there’s actually
06:23
okay and i’ll show you why if we’re
06:27
here and we want to measure the outside
06:29
we hook it on and we pull it like that
06:31
okay but if we measure the inside and we
06:35
we’re actually going to be a 16th of an
06:37
inch off so what you want to do is push
06:39
and then now you’re getting a good
06:41
accurate measurement of the inside
06:43
okay does that make sense so it’s
06:46
the difference of an outside measurement
06:48
and an inside measurement
06:49
okay uh here’s one last thing
06:57
uh tape measures like this one it
06:59
actually will tell you on the side
07:01
the width of this this is three three
07:06
and the reason for that is if i’m going
07:08
to do this and try to measure here
07:10
i can take this measurement actually i
07:13
got to squish it right make sure
07:15
thanks for asking i was i was breaking
07:18
here got to pull back if you want to get
07:20
an accurate measurement you just take
07:22
and you add three and a quarters inches
07:26
so and lastly there’s actually this
07:29
diamond here um and it’s pretty much on
07:34
uh every tape measure you don’t need to
07:37
if if if you’re getting into that it’s
07:41
um the spacing between uh floor joists
07:44
and i-beams so if you’re that far along
07:48
you probably know more than i know about
07:49
about a tape measure but anyway so just
07:52
that’s what that is so um all right
07:57
okay so that’s pretty much what uh what
08:01
uh very handy good to know
08:04
right get into all the little uh small
08:08
and it’s definitely something you want
08:11
thanks for watching and god bless you
