Minimalist Luxury Dominates a Spectacular Rocky Mountain Residence

A jaw-dropping setting, sweeping views from every room and loads of modern luxury make this Colorado residence a true dream home. Called Sunset Ridge, its located near Telluride, one of the countrys premier Rocky Mountain resort towns, offering year-round outdoor activities and loads of charm. Encompassing nearly 12,000 square feet of living space, the home sits on a 35-acre plot, which combined, create one spectacular package.

Driving up to the house is an awe-inspiring experience thanks to its location on a private peninsula. Approaching the property, its bold silhouette and varied rooflines mimic the craggy mountains beyond, visually binding the house to the landscape. Designed by the owner in collaboration with Aspens renowned architect, Bill Poss, the main facade is dominated by the glass entryway that highlights the interior and offers a glimpse of the view beyond the house.

And that view is beyond stunning. The regions natural beauty is what draws people to Telluride and its surroundings. The town itself exudes old-west charm while offering plenty of upscale dining, chic shopping and top cultural events. Until 1972 when it was transformed into a ski resort, Telluride was an old mining town. It is still listed as a National Historic Landmark and boasts the fact that it has no chain stores. The area sits at the foot of 13,000-foot peaks and Colorados tallest free-falling waterfall called Bridal Veil Falls.

With seven bedrooms, eight full bathrooms and two partial baths, the home has plenty of room for family and friends. The cliffside setting makes the expansive glass windows a must for taking in the views. The house also overlooks a pond that reflects its warm light as well as the mountain peaks beyond. The pond is fed by a stream that runs beneath an enclosed bridge linking the master suite to the main part of the house. The backside of the house also has plenty of outdoor living space for dining as well as lounging by a firepit.

Inside, the neutral palette and sleek but comfortable furnishings with rounded silhouettes help keep soften the angles of the structure. Varied materials and textures throughout the space add depth and interest without detracting from the spacious feeling. Even with all that glass, the home still feels cozy because of the natural wood and stone used in the construction, as well as sections that are almost like components within the soaring interior. An optimally located fireplace allows the family to enjoy it from several parts of the space. Seating is strategically placed and organized in different groupings to make the most of the space and its features.

The dining area features a minimalist set that complements the space and maintains the sleek, uncomplicated appearance of the home. Artful pendants of various sizes are used instead of a traditional style of chandelier, which introduces another softer, rounded element into the room. Also, the fact that the lights are not made from a solid material like glass or metal means that they are less disruptive to the sightlines. In homage to whats outside the window, a massive triptych features a stark black and white image of snow-covered mountains.

The kitchen is minimalist in appearance but behind all those sleek cabinets and counters is everything a chef needs. An extra-large island has a convenient seating area at the far end by the refrigerator. Warm underlighting also makes the island the main focus in the room; this technique is used throughout the house to highlight various elements as well as eliminate the need for too many lamps, which would clutter the decor. Cabinetry devoid of handles and knobs keeps the look clean and is ideal for this type of setting.

Just outside the kitchen is an outdoor kitchen, perfect for summer cook-outs in warmer weather. Because the grill is in a covered area and is so close to the main kitchen its also convenient for grilling in cold or snowy weather when the family still wants some barbeque. The stone unit where the grill sits has ample counter space for the cook to keep everything at hand.

Even on the ground level, the view is framed in an expansive sliding door in the media room. A long, low gas fireplace allows enough wall space for a large flatscreen to hang above it. Built-ins hide any electronic components or extras needed for gaming, leaving the room as clutter-free as possible. Underlighting is an important element here too, especially at the bottom of the stairs.

In a home so full of amenities, it makes sense that there is a space for family fun and entertaining. The lower level of the home is as expansive as the main living space and is an indoor playland. A full wet bar is adjacent to another living space with a television and fireplace. The bar area also has its own TV so no one has to miss an important sports match. Theres also ping pong and a full-size pool table for fun. Floor-to-ceiling windows make the lower level as bright and cheery as the upper one, bringing in plenty of natural light.

Bedrooms are located in an upper level. The architecture of the stairs leading to the highest floor of the home is designed to maintain the open space and minimalist aesthetic. Here, an industrial touch the riveted steel support for the lighted wood risers contrasts with the artful blown glass lighting components.

Minimalist but oh-so-luxurious, the master suite is also focused on the view, thanks to its corner orientation and private balcony. A large upholstered headboard and floating nightstands mean the room is clean-lined and very functional. A fireplace and flatscreen television are built into the stone component of the wall and large sliding doors can open the entire corner of the room to the outdoors.

The arrangement of the master bath is both convenient and oriented toward the view. With a seat and a stand-alone bathtub situated by the window, the most functional parts of the bathroom are located at the inside. Of course, you still have a magnificent peek of the mountains from anywhere in the space.
