Everything You’ve Been Wondering about our Transitional Living Room

It’s hard to believe that we’ve already been in our home for two years. Since then, we’ve tackled project after project to make the house really feel like home. And, truthfully, there’s no room that I love more than our main living space.

We designed this space to be neutral and modern, but still warm with hints of tobacco-colored tones in our accessories and decor. Without fail, this is the room we get asked most about online, and I’m thrilled to have a chance to answer a few of our most asked questions and source links with you here.

Our Fireplace

The very first project that we did in our home was updating our fireplace. We knew that we wanted the fireplace to be the focal point of our room, and decided that instead of tiling or painting it, we wanted to cover it in Concrete.

We worked with a local company to cover our entire fireplace in a custom-stained concrete microtopping. The entire process took about 3 days, and we love it! We haven’t experienced any cracks in the concrete and love the statement that it makes. If you’re looking for a similar look, you could also use a Roman Clay or Limewash paint!

Our Drywall Insets

I’ve never been a huge fan of built ins, and typically opt for a sleeker look. But, we knew that we wanted some extra storage and room for styling near our fireplace. Because of that, we opted instead to build custom drywall insets on either side of the fireplace. The shelves are thick enough to hold some of our favorite books and decorations, but not so clunky that it takes away from the space.
