The Grammy award-winning actor is set to prop up his bank account by $3.985 million after listing his stylish La Cañada mid-century modern estate for sale. He’s not leaving the neighborhood just yet, though: back in 2019, he splashed out $4,188,000 on a larger home less than half a mile up the hillside. As to the listed property… well, at just short of $4 million, you’d expect a lot. Fortunately, that’s exactly what whoever the lucky new owner is will be getting. La Cañada Flintridge is located just a short distance northeast of Glendale on the borders of the Angeles National Forest. Downtown L.A. is an easy 30-minute drive away. It’s not a place you naturally associate with celebrities, but there are still a few scattered around the area’s multi-million dollar mansions, including Nancy O’Dell, Gore Verbinski, Angela Bassett, Adam Carolla, and Diane Farr.
The Property
According to Dirt, Glover bought his house back in 2016 for a little over $2.7 million. Set on an acre of land, the property was built in the early 1950s by Pasadena architect Keith P. Marston. As nextluxury.com notes, the house has since been given a dramatic makeover by designer to the stars, Barbara Bestor. Described in the listing as “a prime example of organic modernism,” the 3,300-foot estate sits behind two impressively large gates at the top of a winding mountain road.
The Interior
A cobalt blue front door frames the entrance to the 3 bedroom, 3.5 bathroom house. Leading away from the entrance on the left is a kitchen that’s been modernized to suit contemporary tastes, but which still hangs onto its mid-century modern roots via the bespoke cabinetry and the built-in breakfast bar. A wall of glass opening onto the motor court lends the room a bright spacious feel, a theme that’s continued in the large dining and family rooms. Running across the rooms are two sets of floor-to-ceiling glass sliders that spill onto a grassy knoll on one side and a flagstone terrace on the other. Stunning mountain views are offered from all angles. Dividing the rooms is a dramatic fireplace set in a white brick wall. On the other side of the entryway lies a forest green-hued powder room and a spare bedroom that’s been styled as a small living room. On the far side of the property is a family wing complete with a small laundry room, a bedroom, a full bathroom, and an office space. There’s also a large, private retreat with a huge bedroom and a very sumptuous bathroom that boasts a floor-to-ceiling glass slider, a skylit glass shower, and dual vanities.
The Exterior
The property’s exterior is just as impressive as the interior. Set at some distance from the house itself is a pool complex complete with an enclosed cabana with a full bathroom and living space and a gargantuan-sized pool. Privacy is afforded by a wall of lush foliage. Surrounding the pool is an acre of gardens completed with subtropical flowering blossoms and leafy plants.
The Other La Cañada Property
Glover might be in the process of selling one of his La Cañada residences, but there’s currently no indication he’ll be offloading his other home in the neighborhood. The actor bought his second La Cañada property in 2019 for $4,188,000. Larger and arguably more stylish than Glover’s newly listed estate, the house is set just half a mile away from the 1st property down a mountain road. Built in 1983, the concrete and glass showstopper was designed by architects Buff & Henson. Tucked away at the end of a long driveway and protected by a dense thicket of oak trees, the four-acre estate offers absolute privacy. The interior is a vision of soaring ceilings, tiled flooring, and slab-sided walls.
Like his previous property, floor-to-ceiling glass windows are everywhere, offering sublime views over the surrounding landscape. The master suite boasts a cozy sitting area, a walk-in closet, a full bathroom with a built-in soaking tub, and a private outdoor terrace. Tucked away elsewhere in the property are an additional 5 bedrooms and 6 bathrooms. A loggia, a stylish dining room, and a comfortable family room with a wet bar complete the interior lineup. Outside, a handful of outdoor living areas, a concrete terrace, and an oversize pool offer plenty of space for al fresco entertainment.
The Owner
Over the past decade, Donald Glover’s career has gone from strength to strength.
