Artist and human rights activist Ai Weiwei is selling his New York City apartment for $2,000,000. The oversized one-bedroom at 420 West 25th Street measures 1,400 square feet and features a flexible floor plan and an abundance of natural light. As first reported by Bloomberg, the condo has been staged with several of Ai’s works, none of which are for sale but highlight the home’s gallery-like space.
Described in the listing as an “updated version of a classic Chelsea artist loft,” the apartment features hardwood floors, 12-foot ceilings, and south-facing windows that bring in lots of sunshine.
As Bloomberg reported, the apartment has been staged with Ai’s works, including “Dancers,” a 1983 painting evocative of Keith Haring and Henri Matisse, and three of his “Marble Chair” sculptures.
Currently used as a dining room, the alcove in the living room could be converted into a home office or den.
The kitchen is equipped with a Liebherr refrigerator and a Bosch dishwasher, stovetop, and oven. A coat closet, a washer-dryer, and a full guest bathroom are tucked away in the entryway.
The corner bedroom has a walk-in closet that also leads to the spacious and modern main bathroom.
Ai is a renowned contemporary artist, social activist, and Chinese dissident. He was arrested in China in 2011 for “economic crimes” and prohibited from leaving the country for four years. According to Bloomberg, Ai is selling his Chelsea apartment because he’s been spending more time in Portugal and England than in the United States. He has owned the apartment since 2008.
The nine-story building at 420 West 25th Street, known as Loft 25, sits just one block east of the High Line. Amenities include a doorman, fitness center, screening room, a landscaped roof deck, and a common courtyard.
